On November 20th, the best skateboard slalom racers in Brazil will compete on the scene of the Brazilian Formula 1 Gran Prix, known as Interlagos. Freshly repaved (as billion-dollar race tracks tend to be), the course is smooth, fast and wil feature a course the locals are claiming will demonstrate the fast style of Brazilian Giant Slalom. It all goes as the Grande Premio Brasil de Slalom Skate on a national holliday in Brazil. That’s not all: Jason Mitchell, Barrett Deck and Jake Phelps will be racing!
Now, it’s news enough that Racer X and Chicken are flying to Sao Paulo to race, but did you read that right, the editor of Thrasher Magazine, Jake Phelps, is not only sponsoring a slalom race, but he’s pulling on his checkered spandex tights and racing in it?! Okay, maybe the checkered tights thing is only a nightmare, and we should be stoked to know Phelps is looking outside the box. Look for coverage of the event in the January edition of Thrasher! We sure will.
Let’s get back to the invitational race. It’s 30 racers, and will be the first chance for local talents such as Kako Max, Tiago Tebet, Juliano Cassemiro ,Thiago Gardenal ,Renatão and War X to battle against foreign talents like World Champions Jason Mitchell and Barret “Chicken” Deck , who will be the first “gringos” to ever compete in a slalom competition in Brazil. Since the track has just been repaved, riders will enjoy a thrill only shared by the world’s top drivers.
The competition will also be socially concerned, as the entrance ticket for the public will be 1 kg of any non-perishable food product. The total amount collected will be donated to non-governmental organizations who will distribute the food for the most needed. Sponsored by Wave Boys skate shop, Pocket Pistols, Liga de Esportes and Secretaria Municipal de Esportes da Cidade de São Paulo (the Sports League and the Secretary of Sports of the City of São Paulo), the event will be supported by a good number of national and international skate and non-skate related companies, and will also be sanctioned by the ISSA.
